Plant of the Month

December 4, 2017 by James Cooper

December brings harder frosts to the garden, so this month we have chosen a beautiful grass which shimmers in the sun after a frosty night.

JJ Garden Designs Plant of the Month

Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’

We have always valued ornamental grassses for the impact they make in planting schemes, giving the border a strong vertical element.  Our plant of the month for December is Miscanthus ‘Morning Light’ a great, upright grass with green and cream blades which, as the name suggests, is a spectacular sight with the sun shining through them.  The reason we have declared this our plant of the month is for this plants ability to remain strongly upright during the winter and shrug off the hardest frosts.  A real stunner in the early morning sun.

Grow in full sun in most soils.  Cut back after the winter and before the new spring growth emerges.  What could be easier…

We like to group these grasses with strong evergreen mound shaped plants such as Hebe topiara, Buxus sempervirens or Pittosporum tobira.
