Plant of the Month – January – Hawthorn

December 31, 2015 by James Cooper

Our plant for the month of January is very well deserved.  Crataegus x prunifolia is a species of Hawthorn, perfect for a small garden as it remains compact with a rounded shape and provides the most stunning display of fruit during the winter months.  A feast for the eyes as well as for the birds.  Even before the red/orange apples become evident the autumn leaf colour is spectacular too.

The tree shown in these pictures is planted close to a main road which I drive along regularly and it cheers me up every time I see it.  It’s like the tree has decorated itself with baubles ready for Christmas!

Planting tips

This tree is a good choice for a small garden in an urban or coastal location, it is also tolerant of air pollution too.  It likes most soil types including very dry or wet soil.
