Plant of the Month

July 3, 2020 by James Cooper

In July we are really spoilt for choice when it comes to choosing our plant of the month, although after walking past the group we have growing here it just had to be the Knautia macadonica.  With flowers like a cloud of crimson pin cushions this plant is such a crowd pleaser and is often commented upon.

Plant of the Month – Knautia macadonica

Reaching a height of around 90cm and happily filling the mid section of a sunny border we like to team Knautia with grasses such as Calamagrostis where the wind will sway the two plants together.  Knautia loves to grow in most soils although keep them away from soils which are too damp or too dry.  Keep mildew at bay by watering regularly in dry conditions.

Expect to enjoy these spectacular flowers from mid summer right through until the end of the warmer months and, in case you needed any more convincing, the flowers are loved by insects and butterflies.

The Knautia gives plenty of bang for your buck and is sure to bring a stunning focal point to the garden.
