Plant of the Month
June 5, 2020 by James Cooper
Sometimes you just want a really simple colour scheme for a border, one which harks back to the traditional cottage garden styles. One plant you shouldn’t miss out is this Campanula, the persicifolia ‘Alba’. It’s everything a cool cottage border plant should be, gently spreading by self seeding but never invasive.
The Campanula sends up sturdy stems clad with narrow, pointed leaves that are reminiscent of those of a peach tree, hence its common name of Peach leaved Bellflower. In early to mid summer they bear large, nodding bell shaped pure white flowers which add grace to the garden.
To maintain the length of flowering be sure to deadhead often. Grows up to 60-90cm and prefers a position in partial shade with regular watering.
We like to combine it with Epimedium versicolor and maybe a pulmonaria ‘Cotton Cool’
This Campanula is well worth trying, to give your garden a touch of the past and bring a cool effect for that shadier border.
