Plant of The Month

March 20, 2023 by James Cooper

Together with snowdrops and daffodils the hellebore must rank highly on a list of Spring heralders.  With it’s beautifully detailed dusky pink and cream flowers appearing before the foliage the Hellebore is sure to help drive away the last of the winter blues.

Helleborus orientalis

Helleborus orientalis

Like most Hellebores this variety prefers a moist but well drained soil in partial shade.  They are particularly at home beneath a large deciduous shrub or tree, making the most of the weak sunshine before becoming shaded by the canopy above.

Once established they are happy to quietly spread and bulk up to form fabulous drifts amongst other spring bulbs.

The leaves, once they appear, are large and leathery having an attractive architectural quality which will give useful groundcover during the summer months.

Hellebores can be expensive to buy but once they become established will quickly multiply.

Start with this simple to grow variety and we’re sure you’ll soon be adding to your collection…
