Plant of the Month
April 28, 2020 by James Cooper
This month we are championing the Gallium oderatum (also known as Sweet Woodruff), a hardy perennial which will happily form a dense mat of mid green leaves in challenging positions, such as beneath hedges and trees.
We let ours creep around beneath an old Fig tree with Snowdrops in the early Spring, followed by Bluebells and later Hostas coming up through the fresh, green leaves. Brilliant for dry shade and flowering from April until July, it is also sweetly sceneted and more or less evergreen.
There must be a downside – yes, it’s a bit invasive so don’t plant it near anything too delicate.
Good for that wild, woodland floor look.
