Plant of the Month – October – Pennisetum

We love this delightful, small grass Pennisetum Hameln. It keeps a neat and tidy shape and oozes charm, especially when the low autumn sun shines through its bottle brush plumes.

Planting tips

It prefers a sunny spot with soil which doesn’t dry out too much.  For an even better show try grouping six or seven together in a group with a low growing Aster for company. The bright purple flowers work beautifully with the grass.

They do like to be split after a few years to encourage fresh growth and prevent them dying off in the middle.  We did this earlier this year and now we have more of these great grasses to play with…
